OVERVIEW
Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker is riddled with symbolism that lends to a lot of visual language to explore within a re-imagined title sequence. Creating a compelling visual introduction that foreshadows the plot for such a classic film proved to be quite a challenge.
CONCEPT
But an international movie presents the opportunity to utilize typography between two different languages. This, along with the themes of uncertainty of the unknown and the clashes of Faith and Logic, was a playground of visual semantics.
Ultimately, this sequence aims to convey the progression of conflict with the auditory and visual urgency of the glitches.

RESEARCH
The research for this film started with an in-depth analysis of the use of color, imagery, and the underlying theme. Identifying the aspects that define the movie of what it is allowed further development of how it can be distilled into a title sequence.
PROCESSPreliminary research informed imagery depicting buildings overgrown by nature and railway tracks to indicate a pivotal shift of setting, accompanied by color distinctions. This shift was storyboarded and animated, starting to introduce the element of the two different languages, Cyrillic and English,
morphing into each other.
STYLEFRAMINGFurther on, styleframing introduced the challenge of a container for this system. This was how the glitch mechanic was created, accompanying the element of impending doom and precipice of realization from the characters. This progression is slow, much like the pacing of the movie.

KEY TAKEAWAYSThis project was key to building an eye for imagery and color grading, along with experimentation with sound design. In the end, bringing all these elements of type, video, and sound together to tell a cohesive story proved to be a great exercise in visual storytelling.
