HOW TO RECONTEXUALIZE GREETING CARDS DIGITALLY?
Over the years, handwritten greeting cards have been a collection of sentimental memories of people and moments. Reimagining such a collection in a digital format, not only for mobile and desktop, but having each format tell a different aspect of the story proved to be the most challenging aspect of this prototype website.
CONCEPT
The collection is personally involved and visually diverse, so mobile and desktop tackle each aspect respectively. The mobile version arranges the greeting cards on a color wheel, and a deeper look into each one offers personal context in audio form and relevant metadata.
On the other hand, the desktop version categorizes by the emotion of each card, then goes into the visual characteristics of distinct handwriting and graphic elements. Both versions blend the visual and emotion, telling a full, rounded story about the collection.
RESEARCH & PROCESS
Research for this project was quite minimal, as it mainly focused on examining and categorizing the collection on distinct narrative elements to explore. This process was decided through a brainstorming and wireframing phase.
After a visual concept style was created, it was a matter of making sure there was visual cohesion between the mobile and desktop versions using typography and color treatment. Audio and non-linear navigation were integrated to be more audience-engaging and enhance the story of each version.
KEY TAKEAWAYSOne collection could be contextualized in two distinct ways, and it cements the importance of storytelling. Exploring that while also thinking about mobile and desktop formats introduces the idea of utilizing responsive design to its advantage. Each version has a different story to tell, something that can also be considered in User Experience design as a way to connect with various audiences within the same digital experience.
